Dear Northwest Academy Community,
I am honored to step into the role of Interim Head of School at Northwest Academy, a place that so beautifully merges academic vigor with a deep appreciation for the arts. As I begin this journey with you, I am filled with enthusiasm for the year ahead, knowing that I will have the opportunity to work with such a vibrant and creative community.
For nearly three decades (I rounded up), my career has taken me across the country, allowing me to experience and contribute to a variety of educational environments. From my earliest days as a teacher and coach to my recent leadership roles, I have always been guided by a passion for creating spaces where students feel empowered to explore, learn, and grow. My work in schools has always been more than just a job; it’s a calling that I have pursued with energy, commitment, and a genuine love for the communities I’ve served.
At Northwest Academy, I see a school that perfectly aligns with my beliefs about education. The integration of challenging academics and artistic exploration here is not just a curriculum design—it's a philosophy that prepares students to engage with the world in meaningful and innovative ways. It is a privilege to be part of a school that so deeply values creativity and intellectual curiosity.
As we embark on this year together, I want to share a bit about my personal connection to the arts, which has been greatly influenced by the artistic endeavors of my children. My daughter Maggie’s passion for creative writing, Lulu’s dedication to visual arts, and Gabby’s love for performing arts have all shaped our family’s life in profound ways. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the arts and have continually reminded me of the power of creativity in fostering both personal and academic growth. I see these same values reflected in the work being done at Northwest Academy, and I am excited to support and nurture this environment.
This year, my goals are to maintain the strong academic and artistic standards that define Northwest Academy while also ensuring a supportive, inclusive community for all students and staff. I am committed to being visible and present in the daily life of the school, listening to your ideas, and working collaboratively to address the needs of our students. Together, we will continue to cultivate a school culture that celebrates diversity, encourages risk-taking, and supports each student’s journey to find their voice—both academically and artistically.
I look forward to meeting each of you and to working alongside the talented faculty, dedicated staff, and supportive families that make Northwest Academy such a special place. Let’s make this a year of growth, creativity, and shared success.
Warm regards,
Stephen “Brock” Dunn
